Where Do You Find Joy? It's In The Little Things

Where do you find joy? Is it in something small, something that catches your eye and suddenly takes your breath away? Or are you searching for something bigger, something more tangible and shiny? Are you reaching for something beyond the stars or do you feel it when you make it through a difficult day?

joy

When was the last time you felt the kind of joy that fills your heart and lifts your spirit? That kind doesn't come along often, but when it does make sure you grab it! It's precious and rare.

joy

I have no illusions of becoming rich and famous. My needs are simple: to be happy, to love and be loved, to do good for others and to be as healthy as possible.

joy

Finding joy in my life is the icing on the cake with a big cherry on top.

I recently read an article about a woman who, at midlife, realized the many virtues of moving to Florida. That's something I realized as a child the first time I saw palm trees. It seemed magical to be surrounded by those fan-shaped leaves with their tall, columnar trunks. Along with the vibrant colors of tropical flowers dotting the landscape I felt like I landed in the Land of Oz.

joy

When I got home I'd dream about lying in the shade of a sprawling palm on an empty beach covered with luminous white sand while sipping a tall glass of freshly squeezed orange juice .

joy

The thought of that dream always brought joy to me.

joy

As luck would have, when I was engaged to my husband my future in-laws purchased a lovely condominium in Florida. I'd been to Florida many times with my family, but now I had the best reason to visit on a regular basis.

joy

It seemed beshert.

I've visited countless times over the last three decades and whenever the airplane lands on the runway in West Palm Beach I silently murmur that I'm home again.

joy

I can't explain it but somehow I feel happier in Florida. Being in a tropical area fills my soul. I've spent my whole life in New Jersey; my history is here. But I'm tired of the cold weather, of living in black-and-white days that force me to stay indoors. I'm tired of wearing two pairs of socks and being cold all the time.

Sometimes I feel like my best days are slipping away. When I'm indoors, day after day, I miss the smell of fresh air and taking walks on local trails. It's not until the first buds of spring begin to sprinkle life back into the earth that I feel whole again.

joy

I recently felt a sense of great joy and I know you won't believe me because it's sounds so sappy and ludicrous, but it was when I was in Florida last Thanksgiving. My husband found somewhere new for us to visit.

joy

Green Cay Wetlands Nature Preserve. It was paradise to me.

Green Cay has 100 acres of constructed wetlands with a 1.5 mile elevated boardwalk and dozens of gazebos that gives visitors a front row seat to observing Florida's wildlife and vegetation.

joy

The park is also a water reclamation facility that naturally filters millions of gallons of water each day.

joy

We've seen purple gallinule, black-belly whistling duck, black-crowned night heron, great egret, white ibis, roseate spoonbill, Florida redbelly turtles, marsh rabbits and American alligators.

joy

The flora is also magnificent with sabal and royal palm, live oak, bald cypress and duckweed.

It's an honor to walk the boardwalk while feeling at one with nature.

joy

I think this guy had me in mind for his lunch.

This year hasn't been the kindest to us, so finding Green Cay felt like an answer to a prayer. It felt as if it was meant to be. It's so restorative, so relaxing, so meditative.

When we returned to Florida in early March we walked Green Cay every morning, savoring each sight and sound. Being there feels so right. I never want to leave.

joy

One of the greatest joys for me is be a quiet observer of the extraordinary blessings surrounding us in nature. I miss Green Cay. It makes me feel lighter. I hope we'll be able to return soon. And then, somewhere down the road, perhaps we'll be able to live nearby permanently. Only time will tell.

In the meantime I'll hold on to the joy I felt to get me through difficult days. I think we all need to hold on to the joy we find in our loved ones, in our work, in our passions, and in our hopes and dreams. Hold joy close to your heart. In the words of Buddha:

Our Trip To A Beautiful Sanctuary That Rescues, Protects And Preserves Wildlife

I've been visiting my in-laws in Florida once a year ever since they purchased their condo in 1987. We're as comfortable and familiar with the area they live in as we are at home in New Jersey.

We have a number of places we always visit while we're there, but during our last visit we added a new one: Busch Wildlife Sanctuary in Jupiter, a nonprofit reserve dedicated to the conservation and protection of Florida's wildlife and natural resources.

After we arrived at the Welcome Center one of the volunteers warmly greeted us and explained the mission and layout of the preserve. He handed us pamphlets to guide us on our tour, and then answered my animal-loving questions.

We learned that the Sanctuary has a wildlife hospital where it cares for sick, injured or orphaned wild animals - over 5,000 every year. After receiving appropriate medical care they are rehabilitated and released back into the wild.

This parrot was as entertaining as it was beautiful. What gorgeous colors! I was smitten.

Unfortunately we also learned that some animals become permanent residents after being illegally owned and harmed. They are unable to return to the wild, so they live their lives out at the preserve. They are well cared for.

These two panthers were rescued from someone who illegally "adopted" them and had them declawed. The panthers are now permanent residents at the preserve. I wouldn't want to run into them, but I'll fight for their right to live free and unharmed.

(Editor's Note: Some people are just plain crazy! Owning and declawing panthers? For what purpose? Shame on them. We were told they were caught and prosecuted.)

Since 1981 the sanctuary offers educational programs for people of all ages to learn about the importance of maintaining safety when coming into contact with wild animals, and how to protect the natural resources of Florida.

I watched this parrot as he took care of his friend who was in need of some TLC. Isn't nature incredible?

When we left the Welcome Center and began walking along the nature trails we were immediately struck by the quiet and calm of the preserve.

wildlifeEach trail is clearly marked, and we decided to take our time by making a loop around the entire area so we could visit all of the animals.

Aren't they adorable? (L) Red Barred Hawk (R) Owl

The beauty of pine flatwoods, oak hammocks and cypress wetlands surrounded us as we walked the grounds to view a wide variety of animals  - from eagles, parrots and owls to panthers, bears, crocodiles and bobcats.

I will never grow tired of tropical plantings. They have a beauty all their own.

My family's love of animals goes beyond cats and dogs. It wraps itself around all creatures who roam our planet. That's why we fell in love with the work being done at Busch Wildlife Sanctuary who nurture and protect all animals from further harm.

If you find yourself in the Jupiter area, do yourself a favor and visit this extraordinary sanctuary. You can visit their website to learn more about them. They are a 501(c) 3 organization and receive no funds from the government so they depend on financial support from caring people. They charge no fee but donations are accepted. (I purchased a T-shirt from their gift shop to show my support for their important work.)

Any donations of services, materials or your time are always needed and welcome.

Any outing with my husband and son must include a delicious meal, and this was no exception. After researching Yelp.com for restaurant reviews we decided on Captain Charlies Reef Grill in nearby Juno Beach. Their creative selections of all types of fresh fish, some we don't get at home, were delicious. So if you're planning on visiting Busch Wildlife Sanctuary I highly recommend stopping by Captain Charlies for lunch. Enjoy!

Content Is Always King But A New Blog Design Completes The Picture

Well, folks, here it is.  My redesigned blog, with a new header, logo and theme. I know that content is king, but it feels good to have a new design to match my personality while focusing on the mission of An Empowered Spirit.

content blog

Midlife. Ability Despite Disability. Social Good. Animal Rights. Writing. Nature. Movies. Books. Travel. Life.

When my site first gave me trouble I PANICKED. I ended up having to remove the entire theme of my blog. The only constant was my writing.  Then I realized it's always the writing that matters most .

Hey, Jane Austen didn't have a blog, right? Okay, I'm not Jane Austen, but you know what I mean. Good writing always comes first.

But we all know how nice it is to experience a makeover. Sort of like going to a spa and getting the full treatment of massage, facial and a mani/pedi.

Ahh.

Allow me to quickly introduce you to my photographs that you see in the new header (left to right):

I'd like to thank the very patient Janine Huldie for helping me re-create my site.  Thanks for putting up with the zillions of questions I had.

Here's to moving forward now, empowering each other with all of the joy and wonder in our lives.

What makes you feel good today?
