Do You Know How To Keep Your Pets Safe This Summer? (Giveaway)

By Cathy Chester on June 25, 2016

Every summer I think about the safety of our pets. As temperatures rise and we spend more time outdoors pets are at a higher risk of escaping the safety of their home, getting hurt, or worse.

To keep pets safe the ASPCA created July 1st as ID Your Pet Day. ID Your Pet Day is a holiday to raise awareness about the importance of ID tagging your pet. This special holiday is particularly timely because July 4th is a time when many pets go missing when pet owners are busy with fireworks and outdoor activities.

To spread the word about this important day the ASPCA designed this infographic seen above, along with three tips to keep your pets safe:

  • ·         A personalized ID tag is the best way to increase the likelihood your pet returning home. Make sure your pet is fitted with a collar and ID tag that includes your name and phone number.
  • ·         Implanted microchips can serve as an important security measure to ensure that a pet is returned home in the case of a lost collar and ID tag.
  • ·         Download the ASPCA Pet Safety App to access personalized instructions on how to search for a lost animal in a variety of circumstances: ASPCAapp.org.

Also:

  • The heat of the summer affects pets. It can be deadly for them if left in a car with no open windows. The best thing to do is leave your pet at home when running errands. Cars heat up fast and can affect your pet quickly.
  • Also consider the hot temperatures of paved sidewalks and driveways and how they feel on the paws of your pets. OUCH! Please consider alternate paths.
  • Our pets can't speak for themselves so please treat them with the love, kindness and respect they deserve.

  1. This is beyond an important subject. Especially this year---it looks like it's going to be a hot one. I know I'm keeping my eye out for kids and animals in cars these days. Sadly, people either forget or take chances in this area. I can't stand being in a hot car for even moments, let alone be trapped.

  2. We have a dog and we worry about having her walk on the pavement when the temperatures as hot as they did this past week in North Carolina. I would hate to think my little baby's pads are in pain.

  3. I have shared this, as this is just full of information. I am going to enter the giveaway; I am between pets but I know two people who have taken in so many dogs or cats needing rescue and I think they will love these items.

  4. Oh, how I wish pet owners were tested on all of this! There are so many valuable tips in here, and we must care for our pets in the same way we do our children, because they are our furry children.

  5. It's July 2, and everyone is having cookouts and at night shooting fireworks. There was a dog earlier this evening left in his patio, with no water , food , company, and cleaned up from his poop. He cried and barked for attention and was friendly. I sat next to his yard, and kept him company. Later his master let him in, I hope for the night. I didn't like that he wasn't walked or kept company, while the people were eating and drinking several doors down that the dog knew.

  6. Anyone who is stupid enough to leave a dog in the car on a hot (or even warm) day should be prosecuted. God knows there are warnings out there so no one can claim ignorance about the effect of a hot car on our pets. Great reminders in your post for how to keep our precious dogs safe.

  7. The voiceless animals of the world definitely need this kind of help as the senseless humans can't seem to figure out how hot the sun is!

The dogs of the world surely thank you. And tags? Yes, please use tags. And collars. I nearly killed myself fighting with a stray mutt with no collar in the middle of the road a couple of years ago.

No collar, but miraculously, he was chipped and came from a town 80 miles away! A local dog charity came and picked him up from my house but I never did hear how he came to be so far from home.

That is a special kind of stupid whoever was responsible.
